3.6 Diagnostic Programs, Messages, and Error Codes

The diagnostic programs are the primary method of testing the major components of the HMC. If you are not sure whether a problem is caused by the hardware or the software, running the diagnostic programs will let you know whether the hardware is working correctly.

As you run the diagnostic programs, text messages and error codes are displayed on the screen and are saved in the test log.

Before running the diagnostic programs, you should be aware of the following: machine type and model, configuration of your HMC, and BIOS level.

For the 7042-CR4 HMC, the diagnostic programs are preloaded on the system. For the 7042-C06 HMC, the diagnostic programs are found on a CD.

Refer to the Service Guide for Deskside and Rack-mounted Consoles manual for information about running the diagnostic programs; viewing the resulting diagnostic text messages, diagnostic error codes, and test log; and reviewing the suggested action to correct the problem.
