3.10 Solving Undetermined Problems

If the diagnostic tests did not diagnose the failure or if the HMC is inoperative, work through the following items to resolve the problem:

If you suspect that a software problem is causing failures, refer to the Service Guide for Deskside and Rack-mounted Consoles manual for information about the troublshooting tables.

Damaged data in CMOS memory or damaged BIOS code can cause undetermined problems.

Check the LEDs on all the power supplies. If the LEDs indicates that the power supplies are working correctly, complete the following steps:

  1. Turn off the HMC.
  2. Make sure that the HMC is cabled correctly.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following devices, one at a time, until you find the failure. Turn on the HMC and reconfigure it each time.
    • Any external devices
    • Surge-suppressor device (on the HMC)
    • Modem and mouse
    • Each adapter
    • Hard disk drive
    • Memory modules (The minimum configuration requirement is 1 GB (two 512 MB DIMMs in DIMM slots 1 and 3)
    • Service processor.
  4. Turn on the HMC. If the problem remains, suspect the following components in the following order:
    1. System board
    2. Memory module
    3. Microprocessor
    4. SAS/SATA controller (7042-C06 only)
